History 

Incorporated in 1871 and named in honor of Dr. James Cook Ayer this key transportation center supports both East-West and North-South railroad transportation links. Ayer is roughly 35 miles  northwest of Boston, 32 miles north east of Worcester and 18 miles southwest of Lowell.  The railroad is still a key commuting path to Boston from Ayer.

The town elects five members to the Board of Selectmen and has a town manager for day-to-day operation. An annual Town meeting is scheduled to pass/amend the town bylaws. Selectmen's meeting are typically held every two weeks..
